My apologies if this is copyrighted.Hello baseball season!

This is the first of (hopefully) many posts I’ll write about my thoughts and ideas about baseball as the season goes along. I realize the season started over a month ago so I’m a little behind the times, but I hope you can forgive me considering I have really yet to see a game all season* (It doesn’t help that most Angels’ games start around two in the morning here). Before I get into talking about real baseball - because I know many of you don’t care too much for it - I thought I’d share my experiences with baseball here in Egypt. (Really though, if professional baseball isn’t your thing, feel free to tune out after the story because I spend over 2,000 words talking about it). Read the rest of this entry »

So here I have just a bunch of things that I’ve written on this site that have never seen the light of day. Most are incomplete, unedited thoughts and comments about my life and other things that probably don’t interest you, which is why I didn’t post them at first. But alas, I’m posting them all together now in one giant mishmash. I apologize in advance for the Def Jam poetry thing on ‘time’ towards the end there. Poems have never been my strong suit.

This translates much better as a spoken story because it deals with homophones but I feel it should be shared anyways. Rob and I are often woken up in the mornings by men walking down the street yelling what sounds like “yip yay! yip yay!” What they are apparently really saying is “biqya”, which roughly translates to “old shit”, but it sounds like ‘yip yay’ so that’s what we’re going to keep referring to it as. Basically, they collect your junk and try and pawn it off to other people. Read the rest of this entry »

So I really have no idea what I want to do with my life. I mean, there are many things that I would absolutely love to do with my life that just aren’t legitimate possibilities now and some that realistically never were. I would love to explore space freely and/or time travel - born about 200 years too soon for that. I would absolutely love to pick up every homeless person I see and give them a steady job and a roof over their heads* - don’t have the money. I would give anything to be out at Spring Training right now pitching among my childhood idols - I was a stupid teenager and quit.

*I realize that one is a little Miss America-y (i.e. super idealistic) but whatever, I’d do it. Read the rest of this entry »

So two nights ago I saw the Yngwie Malmsteen* of Oriental/Near East tabla music. Her name was Raquy (pronounced Rocky, of course) and she is an American “tabla prodigy” - according to the program - who likes to spend her winters in Cairo. The show itself was like a drum circle on speed: complete with all the lightning quick drum and tambourine pieces** one can handle and led by a musician who seemed to time warp here straight from Woodstock. Either that or she just flew in from Venice Beach.
